We are disappointed that due to the pandemic, our screening of Conviction will be postponed. Stay healthy and we look forward to planning a new date to screen the documentary and create a community discussion on Canada’s Justice System and the impact on women.
Coming Summer 2020! Uppity Girl will screen Conviction, a documentary film about women in prison and what they needed in their lives to avoid incarceration. Conviction flips the narrative away from pop culture's voyeuristic lens and hands it to the women who are being victimized, marginalized and criminalized in our society. Not another ‘broken prison’ film, Conviction is a ‘broken society’ film – an ambitious and inspired re-build of our community, from the inside out. With more women in prisons than ever before, the film implicates viewers to question the status quo, and to consider a different kind of society that better supports the most vulnerable among us.
On May 31st, 2017 Uppity Girl is screening The Uncondemned. The documentary tells the gripping and world-changing story of a group of young international lawyers and activists who fought to make rape a crime of war, and the Rwandan women who came forward to testify and win justice where there had been none. Up until this point, rape had not been prosecuted as a war crime and was committed with impunity. All Proceeds will be donated to Peace is Loud.
